NCA is offering in cooperation with the Canadian Centre for Language and Cultural Studies (CCLCS) an International TESL program for students who wish to obtain a certificate in teaching training that balances theory and practical application. Students will first be admitted into 3 weeks of TOEFL preparation before they begin 4 weeks of full-time classroom instruction on teaching English as Foreign Language combined with seminars on English for Young Children (TEYC) and TOEFL instruction.
During the middle of each classroom week, students will take part in an observational session all day in NCA’s most advanced ESL class. It all ends with a practicum to give students hands-on experience teaching a variety of adult learners of English—visitors to Canada, immigrants, and refugees. The course design and delivery provides students with the opportunity to improve their own English language skills while at the same time developing the expertise to become a teacher.
The programs emphasize the communicative approach to language teaching. Students participate in small and large group discussions, simulations, and feedback sessions. The course includes the following topics:
TOEFL preparation: 90 hours
Classroom instruction: 80 hours
TEYC Seminars: 15 hours
Observation: 10 hours (5 hours at NCA and 5 hours at CCLCS)
Practicum: 10 hours (at CCLCS)
The TEFL Certificate for International Students includes 10 hours of observation. Five hours at NCA and five hours at CCLCS in a government funded multicultural classroom. TEFL students will see the theory they have studied in class in action, by watching the delivery of lessons by professional teachers. Students are encouraged to analyze and discuss the methods and strategies they observe.
The TEFL Certificate practicum is held at the CCLCS location in the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program. Students work with the same classroom teacher, their one-on-one mentor for 10 hours over a one week period. After teaching, each student will receive feedback. This allows the students to consolidate all they have learned throughout the course.
For an additional fee, students are welcome to participate in the CCLCS 5-hour teacher development workshops offered on Saturdays. It is a good opportunity for students to work with and meet Canadian teachers taking the TESL program at CCLCS.
CCLCS are leaders in TESL training. They have been training teachers since 1991 and were one of the first programs to be recognized by TESL Ontario and TESL Canada. Since then, they have trained over 2,000 teachers who have gone on to teach across Canada and around the world.
